If you asked a group of people to list the people who shaped America, the list of names would be woefully unbalanced. When we learn about the events and people who have shaped the United States, who have invented here, fought here, created here, and ruled here, the women fade into the background, with a few token representatives of the sex mentioned in the footnotes. This is even truer for queer women, transwomen, and women of color. Why do we not learn about the women who have added substantively to our history and culture?read more
Author Rory Dicker reflects on why we don’t hear about women’s history or feminism in school, realizing that it has to with American culture’s preference for women who adhere to traditional norms of femininity, women who do not speak out and disrupt everyday life. This preference is, of course, antifeminist. In addition, schools tend to try to have a “fair and balanced” approach when they teach history; as long as American ideals are emphasized, history classes before college tend not to disclose clear political agendas.read more
